Background of the Study

Media literacy, the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in various forms, has become an essential skill in today’s information-driven world. In Jere Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, where political engagement is often influenced by access to media and the quality of information, media literacy plays a crucial role in shaping political participation. Given the complex socio-political context of the region, where insurgency and political instability have hindered consistent access to reliable media channels, media literacy programs could empower citizens with the tools to critically engage with political information (Ali & Musa, 2023). Media literacy can help individuals decipher the often confusing and polarized narratives disseminated through television, radio, and social media, allowing them to make informed political decisions. Furthermore, the role of media literacy in influencing voter behavior and participation in political processes in Jere LGA has not been sufficiently studied. This research aims to explore how media literacy influences political participation in this region, especially in the context of current socio-political challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While media literacy is increasingly recognized as a necessary skill for informed political participation, its impact on political behavior in Jere LGA remains unclear. Despite the proliferation of media outlets, many residents still face challenges in accessing credible political information due to political violence, limited infrastructure, and media bias. Consequently, the level of informed political participation is often low, and voters may be influenced by misinformation or unbalanced reporting. The problem lies in understanding whether media literacy programs or the increased media consumption in the area can truly drive higher engagement and informed decision-making among citizens. This study seeks to examine how media literacy influences political participation, especially with regard to voter turnout, political discourse, and community activism in Jere LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the level of media literacy among residents of Jere LGA.

  2. To explore the relationship between media literacy and political participation in Jere LGA.

  3. To assess the impact of media literacy programs on residents' political behavior in Jere LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of media literacy among residents of Jere LGA?

  2. How does media literacy influence political participation in Jere LGA?

  3. What role do media literacy programs play in enhancing political engagement in Jere LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive relationship between media literacy and political participation in Jere LGA.

  2. Higher levels of media literacy lead to greater political engagement and informed voting behavior in Jere LGA.

  3. Media literacy programs enhance political participation by improving the ability of citizens to critically evaluate political information in Jere LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will provide insights into how media literacy affects political participation in a region affected by political instability and limited access to information. By understanding this relationship, policymakers and media organizations can develop strategies to improve media literacy programs, which may enhance voter education and lead to more informed political participation. Furthermore, the findings could be applied to other regions facing similar challenges, contributing to the development of more democratic and politically active societies.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus specifically on the relationship between media literacy and political participation in Jere LGA, Borno State. It will investigate residents' access to media, media literacy levels, and political engagement, without considering other external factors such as broader national political campaigns or media regulations.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Media Literacy: The ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in various forms, fostering critical thinking and informed decision-making.

  2. Political Participation: Active engagement in political processes, including voting, campaigning, and community activism.
